Principal

Dorothy Wheaton

My name is Dorothy Wheaton, and I am the principal of Our Mother of Mercy Catholic School. I am a former student of Our Mother of Mercy Catholic School by way of Broussard Street.  After completion of 8th grade, I attended Blessed Sacrament High School thru the 10th grade.  I then went to Hebert High School and graduated in 1966.  My undergraduate and graduate work was done at Lamar University.  My undergraduate studies were speech/theater, history, and English; and, my graduate studies netted me a Masters of Education in Counseling and Administration.  I believe that all children can learn and succeed, and that they are our most valuable resource and should be treated that way.  I have been an educator for 37 years; and, I began as a teacher at St. James in Port Arthur.

In 1974, I began working in the old South Park ISD, and at the merging of South Park and BISD, I worked for Beaumont Independent School District.  I continued to teach until 1990, when I became the counselor at Willie Ray Smith Middle School.  In 2001, I changed districts to become the assistant principal in Silsbee Texas at Edward-Johnson Middle School.  I retired in July, 2007; and, I remained retired until I took the position of principal at Our Mother of Mercy.  This has been a unique experience for me; and, it is one that I do believe was God’s plan.

Equally important to me is my family.  I am the wife of Earl Wheaton, Sr.; and, we celebrated our 15th year anniversary on August 12, 2010.    Together, my husband and I have six children.  Four attended Our Mother of Mercy Catholic School.  In our blended family, we have fourteen grandchildren.  Two of those grandchildren attend Our Mother of Mercy School.  My husband and I are active members of Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church.  We have a strong belief in God; and, we know that ALL things are possible through Him.
